Foundry Sand Reuse State Resource Locator

Foundries use sand in the mold-making process and generate approximately 10 million tons or more of sand each year. Once the sand becomes structurally unsuitable for foundry use, most of it is discarded in municipal or private landfills.

However, a large majority of the sand disposed of in landfills is considered non-hazardous and has the potential to be “beneficially reused” as construction fill, in roadbeds, in cement manufacturing, and for other uses.

This resource is designed to provide an overview of current state foundry sand reuse regulations and policies; acceptable reuse options and restrictions; permit, testing, recordkeeping and reporting requirements; and state agency contact information.

Through a joint effort by the foundry industry and other involved parties, the EPA, and state agencies, there is a significant opportunity for increasing the beneficial reuse of foundry sand.
